Vaikundum
Though backwater cruising has been going on in the Kerala backwaters for some time, until now it had been restricted to small groups of twos and threes (for overnight trips as boats did not have more than 2 rooms) or day trips for groups. In our philosophy of "leadership by innovation" and our tradition of introducing newer concepts in the market, we created the 9 bedroom houseboat "Vaikundum" on the backwaters of Kerala.
The first of its kind, the boat is divided into lower and upper decks and has ten spacious well appointed and tastefully furnished bedrooms on the lower deck, each with large windows for uninterrupted views.
Each airconditioned room is tastefully decorated with traditional antique doors from ancient Kerala homes, which are beautifully carved and have spot ornate brass door knobs, each as traditional as the door itself. The rooms are complete with attached toilets, running hot and cold water in showers and washbasin. The boat has solar panels to provide warm water and is fitted with onboard septic tank, to ensure the lagoon water is not contaminated.
The upper deck has large dining cum lounge area with 360 views. Sun deck in the front of the boat is an ideal place during day times for a sunbath. In the front, there are antique carved pillars from ancient temples which were destroyed by passage of time and have been painstakingly collected and restored. The boat is powered by outboard engines
Traditionally called a "Kettuvallum" (meaning rice barge), the shallow and rounded hull of the boat makes it the largest boat of this kind in the world. Each Anjali wood plank is joined to the next with strong coir rope and then coated with caustic black resin obtained from boiled cashew kernels and fish oils. These boats were built for transportation in the placid lagoon water and the technique of boat making has existed for many centuries.
With the introduction of "Vaikundum", large group of tourist can now explore the pristine beauty of the backwaters of Kerala in comfort which was not available to them before.
